Aframomum mildbraedii (African cardamom) 5.5 inch square pot

Common Name: African cardamom. Family: Zingiberaceae. Black seeds have a spicy flavor similar to cardamom.  Large red pods are carried just above the ground. Typically blooms in the spring with pods maturing in 2 to 3 months.   Native to tropical rain forest of Africa.   Plants reach 5 to 6 ft. tall but can form pods when smaller.  Seems to grow well in containers. We have produced pods in 2 gallon pots and even a couple in 5.5 inch pots.  Full sun to medium shade. Rich slightly acidic well drained soil. Use a balanced fertilizer with micronutrients. Still rare in the US. It is very easy to grow on the windward side of Hawaii island (the Big Island). Outdoors in USDA Zones 10B to 11.  I don't know if this plant will tolerate any freezing.

Plants are grown in 5.5 inch square pots (2.6 liter volume) Stems are typically 32 to 42 inches tall.  3.75 lbs. shipping weight.

Certified to ship to all 50 US states.
