Areca macrocarpa (5.5 inch square pot)
Medium to tall tropical palm similar in appearance to betel nut. Large orange fruits are nearly 3 inches long and are used like betel nut. The internodes are shorter than betel nut palm (Areca catechu). Leaves seem to be held a little less upright than A. catechu. Likes moist soil. Fertilize with a palm fertilizer several times per year. Slightly acidic soil high in organic matter is best. Fast growing in warm conditions with high humidity. Begins to fruit at about 5 to 6 years old. Native to Philippines. Outdoors in areas that rarely fall below 55F.
